I've quit my 3 1/2 year career in engineering. It started with R&D, which was OK, but then I ended up in manufacturing, which was when the crazy midnight calls came. I had to support a 7 day, 24 hour manufacturing line with virtually non existing resources. On top of which, engineering personel was suppose to be a Monday to Friday, 8 to 5 position, and paid as such, with no overtime pay >.<
Oh.. did I mention a meager 2% pay raise a year, which is not even enough to cover the inflation / GST increase? It's as if I'm taking a passive pay decrement annually. -.-"
On top of that, in the few corporate job that I went through - credit travels up, and blame travels down. The boss is always right, and you are never so. Great huh?
Enough is enough, so I tell myself. Then I quit and changed career. I'm doing direct investment now, if you're wondering. Some small family business I would have to pick up sooner or later. In hind sight, I should have done it sooner. But anyway...
Intro's over, now onto the main plot:
Now that I'm not going to office anymore.. strange that I should say this, but it is sometimes boring to just stay at home. Which makes my ass itch to go travelling, which has always been my hobby. So far I've been to the States, Canada, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Thailand (Thailand was when I was very young, cant remember a thing though). Also I've been to 11/13 States of Malaysia (except Sabah and Kelantan). Sabah is definitely one of my next destination.
So I'm thinking of setting up some sort of travelling group within my circle of friends.
Some of the pros are as such listed:
1. More people more fun
2. More people - cheaper, in more ways then one (group fare, shared accomodation, etc)
3. Spend time with old friends (those of us who are working sometimes miss this)
4. Meet new friends
5. I just happened to organise a trip to somewhere u really wanted to go.
6. For those who love to travel but haven't found the travelling companions.
7. Don't know how to get old friends (schoolmates) for such trips, and new friends (colleagues) might not be available (leave approval, family issues, etc).
Cons... well, conflicts do tend to arise sometimes. But I'll see how we can keep it from minimum to none. For people who mind, we can always do the travel plans together, but I do tend to keep the plans free and easy. And of course, budget is always a concern and will be looked into.
Besides, I'm not expecting too many interested + committed replies for the same trip, so the group should tend to be small, maybe 4 - 6 people instead of a full fledge 30 pax field trips (I'm not gonna organise anything like that again @_@)
Most likely it would start with something like this:
1. pick a destination, perhaps by popular vote.
2. draw up a rough plan so we'll have an idea what the cost would be like
3. vote for a stay duration vs budget
4. get things rolling for the group of people who are in for it.
Now all I need is to figure out how to setup a forum - poll - blog thingie for people to sign up and start things for the next 2008 trip xD. For those interested in this idea, suggestions are welcome!
Any takers? (if interested, please leave a comment so I could judge the initial responce - idea worth pursuing or abandon hope hahaha)
